New York City: Divine services for Passion Week begin in Synodal Cathedral, led by Eastern American Diocesan Hierarchs

This year, to the joy of the clergy and faithful, the divine services for Passion Week at the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City are being served by the hierarchs of the Eastern American Diocese – Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York and Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan. They began the final days before the Glorious Resurrection of Christ on Great Monday, April 25, serving the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. The hierarchs were co-served by cathedral clergy.

The faithful – those able to take time from work to pray – gathered in the church for Liturgy, their thoughts on Passion Week, when the Lord comes to greet us, instituting the Mystical Supper, enduring arrest, suffering, Golgotha, the descent into Hades and, finally, arising on Pascha.

On Great Monday, the Church commemorates the Old Testament Patriarch Joseph, who was sold into slavery in Egypt because of his brothers’ jealousy, and whose sufferings served as a foreimage of the sufferings of the Savior. Also commemorated this day is the image of the barren fig tree – a symbol of the hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, who did not offer sincere repentance, faith, prayer, or good works.

That same evening, Matins was served in the Synodal Cathedral.
