New York City: Metropolitan Hilarion performs Diaconal Ordination of Subdeacon Pavel Roudenko at Festal Liturgy for the Meeting of the Lord

On Thursday, February 15, the great feast of the Meeting of the Lord, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City. Concelebrating with His Eminence were Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal & Canada, Archpriest Stefan Pavlenko (rector of the Church of All Russian Saints in Burlingame, CA), Archpriest Andrei Sommer (cathedral senior priest), Archpriest Edward Chervinsky (cathedral cleric), Priest George Temidis (deputy rector of the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY), Protodeacons Nicolas Mokhoff and Vadim Gan (cathedral clerics), Protodeacon Dimitri Temidis (cleric of Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY), and Deacon Alexey Golubov (cleric of St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York City).

At the service, Metropolitan Hilarion ordained longtime Reader and Subdeacon Pavel Roudenko to the diaconate.

Fr. Pavel was born in Boston, where in his childhood he would attend Holy Epiphany Church – the only Russian Orthodox church in Massachusetts at that time – with his parents. The first time Fr. Pavel recalls serving in the altar was when he was four years old for his grandfather’s funeral, and even then he dreamed of becoming a deacon.

At 15 years old, he moved with his family to California. There Fr. Pavel’s father, Andrei Vladimirovich Roudenko, became the church choir director, while his mother Marina Sergeevna, who read on kliros, began to teach her son to read Church Slavonic.

Among those young Pavel looked up to for their service to the Church ere Archpriests Serafim Gan and Andre Papkov, Protodeacons Nikolai Porshnikoff and Nicholas Triantafillidis, Protodeacon Victor Ganson (cleric of Holy Epiphany Church in Boston) and his brother George Ganson, grandsons of Bishop Mitrofan (Znosko-Borovsky; +2002).

On May 15, 2005, Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco & Western America, under whom Pavel had already been serving and helping at the diocesan headquarters, tonsured him a reader. On May 31, 2015, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan ordained him a subdeacon.

Fr. Pavel is married to Anisia Temidis – a singer in the Synodal choir, daughter of Protodeacon Dimitri and Matushka Eugenia Temidis. With a background in business administration, Fr. Pavel is continuing his secular job and taking correspondence courses at Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville.

Fr. Pavel served his first service as the sole deacon on the evening of February 16, and following morning served at Divine Liturgy in St. Sergius of Radonezh Church in the Synodal Headquarters.
