Jerusalem: Bishop Nicholas serves 40th Day Panihida for Metropolitan Hilarion in Holy Ascension Convent

On Friday, June 24, the summer feast of the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Refectory Church of the Holy Ascension Convent on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Following Liturgy, His Grace served a panihida for the ever-memorable sixth First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Hilarion (Kapral), on the 40th day of his repose.

His Grace was co-served by Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky; head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem) and convent clergy. Singing at the panihida was the PaTRAM male choir under the direction of Vadim S. Gan, conductor of the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign Choir in New York City. Praying in the church was convent rectress Abbess Barbara (Novikova).

Upon conclusion of the service, Bishop Nicholas addressed the faithful with a sermon, touching on the earthly life of Metropolitan Hilarion and his lasting legacy, and the need for us who remain to emulate his charitable nature.
