New York City‒Mahopac: Council of Bishops continues its Work

On Wednesday, September 14, participants of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad heard reports by ruling bishops of the Dioceses of Canada, Mid-America, Great Britain, and Western America. The archpastors then heard a report by His Grace Irenei, Bishop of London & Western Europe, Secretary of Inter-Orthodox Relations of the Synod of Bishops, on events in the Orthodox world since the last Council of Bishops, which led to serious deliberation on the joys and problems in the life of the Church of Christ.

On Thursday, September 15, the third day of the Council, the session was held at the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY, where they were warmly received by His Grace, Bishop Jerome (Shaw), who resides there in retirement, and parish rector Priest George Temidis. After venerating the holy icons and relics, the archpastors continued their work in the large church narthex.

After the morning session and a luncheon, magnificently prepared by the parish sisterhood, Council members and their associates examined the church building and visited the cemetery, where Archbishop Seraphim (Ivanov; +1987), who repose 35 years ago, is interred. The bishops then continued their deliberations, discussing various Synodal departments and stavropegial parishes, subject directly to the President of the Synod of Bishops.

On Friday, 16 September, meetings continued, concentrating on issues raised by Bishop Irenei. The Council also heard a report by Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem under the Russian Church Abroad, and heads of other Synodal institutions.
