On Monday, July 8, His Grace, Bishop Jerome (Shaw), arrived at Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY, to celebrate Divine Liturgy and officiate the funeral of Archpriest George Larin, pastor emeritus of that parish and one-time diocesan secretary, who reposed in the Lord on July 5.
Concelebrating with His Grace at Liturgy were:
- Archpriest Chad Williams (rector of St. Alexander Nevsky Memorial Church in Richmond, ME)
- Archpriest Elias Gorsky (parish rector)
- Archpriest George Temidis (secretary of the diocesan administration)
- Priest Andrew Podymow (parish cleric)
- Protodeacon Dimitri Temidis (cleric of St. Elizabeth the New-Martyr Church in Columbia, SC)
- Deacon Alexey Pnev (cleric of Novo-Diveevo Convent in Nanuet, NY), and
- Deacon Nicholas Ilyin (parish cleric).
After Liturgy, Bishop Jerome delivered a eulogy, in which he spoke about his first memory of Fr. George: his ordination to the priesthood by then-Bishop Laurus at Jordanville in 1969. At the time, Bishop Jerome was a seminarian and served as one of the subdeacons, which enabled him to be the first person to receive Fr. George’s priestly blessing.
The Funeral Rite for a Priest then began, at which the above-named clergy were joined by:
- Archpriest Alexander Fedorowski (dean of St. Seraphim Cathedral at Novo-Diveevo Convent)
- Archpriest Mark Burachek (dean of the Hudson Valley)
- Archpriest George Zelenin (rector of St. Michael Church in Wayne, NJ)
- Archpriest Alexandre Antchoutine (dean of New York City & Long Island)
- Archpriest Constantine Semyanko (rector of Holy Presentation Church in Stratford, CT)
- Hieromonk Theognost (Kogan; cleric of the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City)
- Priest Artem Siss (cleric of Novo-Diveevo Convent)
- Protodeacon Serge Arlievsky (cleric of the Synodal Cathedral)
- Protodeacon Alexander Jarostchuk (cleric of Holy Epiphany Church in Boston, MA), and
- Deacon Matthew Keil (cleric of the Synodal Cathedral).
After the singing of "Memory Eternal," eulogies were offered by Fr. Elias Gorsky, Fr. Dimitri Temidis, and Fr. Andrew Podymow. More words of fond recollection were spoken at the memorial repast that followed.
That evening, the casket was carried out of the church to the singing of the Trisagion, and was taken away for the trip to Jordanville and the burial service the following day. A number of parishioners also set out for the final part of the exequies.
On Tuesday morning, July 9, His Grace Luke, Bishop of Syracuse, officiated the services and burial at Holy Trinity Monastery. The eulogy at the gravesite was delivered by Archpriest Victor Potapov (dean of the Capital Region).
