With the blessing of Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America & New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, on Saturday, December 27, while the Orthodox Church was immersed in the Nativity Fast, a small corner of the Lomas community became the setting for an everyday miracle. Under the Matagalpa, Nicaragua sky, a mission named after the Holy Hierarch John of Shanghai & Saint Francisco carried out an event that defied expectations to embrace hope.
St. John of Shanghai was a man who never allowed a child to suffer hunger or abandonment. It is said that he traveled through the most dangerous neighborhoods of Shanghai, collecting orphans, and that his prayer was so powerful that he was able to multiply resources where there were none.
Like St. John, who saw not structures but souls, the local mission understands that the True Faith is not preached only with words, but with a constant presence among those most in need. In this community of Lomas, Orthodoxy has ceased to be a distant doctrine and has become an outstretched hand that lifts up the fallen, fulfilling the Gospel promise: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me" (Matthew 25:40).
The day began with a pilgrimage that prepared the spirit, immediately followed by a moleben to our Lord Jesus Christ. It was in that moment of incense and prayer that it was proclaimed, "God is with us."
After this spiritual nourishment, the atmosphere transformed into a celebration of humanity. Las Lomas was filled with children’s activities full of laughter, games, and comfort, led by the faithful of the mission. In a world that often ignores vulnerability, this work became a mirror of love, exalting the joy and value of each child. What began as a project to provide gifts for 100 children was transformed, by divine grace, into a distribution for 170 children, 170 packages of sweets, and food for 300 people, including basic staples for the families.
The martyr and missionary Fr. Daniel Sysoev reminded the Church of her primary duty: "The Christian is God’s ambassador on earth. Our task is not simply to improve people’s lives, but to reveal the Living God to them through our own love and sacrifice" (cf. Instructions for the Fisher of Men, Priest Daniel Sysoev).
For the collaborators of this work, who have worked from Christian love, and the committed faithful, success is not measured in numbers, but in the "Christian vitality" that is felt when faith produces works. As the Gospel says, " Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven" (Matthew 5:16).
This miracle would not have been possible without the hearts of the benefactors, to whom the mission offers humble gratitude and prayers. Their contributions allowed this arduous work to materialize in this "little corner of Central America." They are, in essence, collaborators with Christ, allowing the light of the Nativity, which will be celebrated on January 7, to shine from now on in the homes of Matagalpa.
As evening fell, a powerful truth remained: Orthodoxy is a living fire. In every grain of rice and in every toy, there beats a God Who descended to the dust of our earth to tell us that no one is alone. If this group of God-loving people could feed hundreds and restore hope, a soul-stirring question remains: What prevents us from transforming our faith into a miracle? Because today, in the community of Lomas (Matagalpa), the Nativity was not just a memory, but a victory of love over indifference; a testament that, through obedience and charity, Heaven has touched the earth.
Wondrous is God in His saints!
