Rochester, NY: Bishop Nicholas leads Divine Services in Protection of the Mother of God Church

On Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th of March, the feast of St. Gregory Palamas, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan paid an archpastoral visit to Protection of the Mother of God Church in Rochester, NY. Thus was revived a tradition begun in the 1960s by Archbishop Averky (Taushev) and continued by Metropolitan Laurus, which saw hierarchs visit the parish annually – not only on the parish’s patronal feast day, but also on the second Sunday of Great Lent. At the Divine Liturgy, His Grace was co-served by parish rector Archpriest Gregory Naumenko, Abbot Theophylact (Clapper-DeWell; cleric of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY), and parish clerics Protodeacon Andrej Strapko and Deacon Nikifor Franklin. At the conclusion of Liturgy, a multitude of the faithful, including many children, received Christ’s Holy Mysteries.

Bishop Nicholas addressed the gathered faithful with an uplifting sermon, in which he called on them to labor through the remaining weeks of Lent, thereby preparing themselves to greet the Risen Christ. The clergy and parishioners thanked Bishop Nicholas for his prayerful service, and expressed the hope that he will be able to continue the parish’s tradition in coming years with many more future visits.
