Nyack, NY: Bishop Jerome celebrates Liturgy for Meeting of the Lord in Holy Protection Church

On Sunday, February 15, the great feast of the Meeting of the Lord, Bishop Jerome performed an archpastoral visit to Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY, and celebrated the festal Divine Liturgy. While the clergy prepared to greet the bishop at the appointed hour, parish cleric Archpriest Ilya Gorsky performed the traditional blessing of candles.

At Liturgy, His Grace was co-served by Fr. Ilya and parish Protodeacon Dimitri Temidis. The church was filled to capacity, and Bishop Jerome made special note of the "splendid job" done by the parish choir.

The hierarchal guest delivered two sermons: the first, in Russian, on the words "The Lord hath spoken His salvation" (Psalm 97:2), touching on the fact that that day marked Orthodox Youth Day, on which, celebrating the Meeting of the Lord, the faithful should think of "churching" our youth: the Lord hath spoken His Salvation, and young people need to understand that Orthodox Christianity is the true Faith and the path to salvation.

In English, His Grace spoke on the words of St. Paul, "Lest by your freedom, your weaker brethren perish" (I Corinthians 8:9), relating to causing scandal in the Church.

After the sermons and "Blessed be the name of the Lord," Bishop Jerome led the clergy in serving a moleben for the rector, Archpriest George Larin, who is currently in the hospital awaiting two serious operations. All of the clergy and faithful of the Eastern American Diocese are asked to lift up their prayers for Fr. George’s speedy recovery.

Upon completion of the Liturgy, Fr. Dimitri read the Patriarch’s epistle to the church youth.

After the service, a festal luncheon was held in the parish hall.
