Mahopac, NY: Metropolitan Hilarion performs Priestly & Diaconal Ordination at New Kursk Root Hermitage

On Sunday, September 20, His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern America & New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, paid an archpastoral visit to the Nativity of the Mother of God Church at the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY, and celebrated the Divine Liturgy, co-served by His Grace, Bishop Jerome, who lives and serves at the Kursk Root Hermitage.

The hierarchs were co-served by Archpriest Alexander Donchenko (rector of St. Nicholas Church in Poughkeepsie, NY), Abbot Cornelius (Apukhtin; parish cleric), Archpriest Alexandre Antchoutine (dean of Long Island & the Hudson Valley), Protodeacons Dimitri Temidis (cleric of Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY) and Serge Arlievsky (cleric of Holy Dormition Convent Novo-Diveevo in Nanuet, NY), parish Deacon George Temidis, Deacons Serguei Mikhailov (cleric of Holy Annunciation Church in Flushing, NY), Dionysius Lvov (cleric of the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City), Michael Wengrin (treasurer of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops), and Vladimir Barros (cleric of Holy Virgin Intercession Church in Glen Cove, NY), as well as clerics of the Georgian Orthodox Church, who serve in a recently founded Georgian parish at the Hermitage.

The service took place in the presence of the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God – Protectress of the Russian Diaspora – and the staff of the Holy Hierarch John of Shanghai & San Francisco, brought to the church specially for the feast.

During reading of the Hours, Metropolitan Hilarion awarded parish Reader Konstantin Aleshin the right to wear the orarion, after which, at the Metropolitan’s direction, Bishop Jerome ordained Reader Alexei Pnev a subdeacon. At the Little Entrance, Metropolitan Hilarion awarded Fr. Cornelius the right to wear the jeweled cross. The Epistle and Gospel were read in three languages: Church Slavonic, English, and Georgian.

After the Great Entrance, parish Deacon George Temidis was ordained to the priesthood; following the Eucharistic Canon, Subdeacon Alexei Pnev was ordained to the diaconate. Both of the newly ordained clergymen will carry out their obedience at the Nativity of the Mother of God Church.

Upon completion of Liturgy, words of congratulation were offered to the newly ordained Fr. George. His brother, Protodeacon Dimitri, presented a letter of congratulation from Archpriest George Larin (close friend and longtime dean of Upstate New York), who was unable to attend due to recent illness, but sent his own pectoral cross as a gift for the new priest. On behalf of the Diocesan Council, Fr. Alexandre Antchoutine presented Fr. George with a new set of red vestments.

After the service, a bountiful luncheon was served indoors and outdoors by the sisterhood. The above-mentioned clergy were joined by Archpriest Ilya Gorsky (rector of Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY).

That evening, the All-Night Vigil was served for the parish’s patronal feast day – the great feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God. The following morning, Bishop Jerome celebrated the Liturgy, co-served by Fr. Cornelius, Frs. George & Dimitri Temidis, and Fr. Alexei Pnev. His Grace delivered a sermon in which he spoke on the Sunday Gospel (the Parable of the Talents) and how it relates to the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos. Upon completion of the service, a luncheon was once again held in the parish hall.
