New York City: Metropolitan Hilarion celebrates Liturgy in Synodal Cathedral, leads first American Gathering in Memory of Priest Daniel Sysoev

On Sunday, November 8, the feast day of the Holy Great-Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-Gusher, Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City was celebrated by Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York. His Eminence was co-served by clerics of the Synodal Cathedral: Archpriest Andrei Sommer (cathedral senior priest), Archpriest Vasiliy Raskovskiy, Hieromonk Eutychius (Dovganyuk), Protodeacons Nicolas Mokhoff and Vadim Gan, as well as clerics visiting for the memorial gathering dedicated to the sixth anniversary of the report of Priest Daniel Sysoev: Archpriest Dionysius Pozdnyaev (rector of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Hong Kong), Priest George Maximov (professor at Sretensky Theological Seminary in Moscow), Hieromonk Savvatey (Ageye; rector of St. Nicholas Church in Reading, PA), and Priest Vadim Zakharkin.

The church was filled with worshippers, many of whom communed of Christ’s Holy Mysteries. Upon completion of the service, Fr. George Maximov delivered a sermon on the topic of the Gospel reading on the rich man and Lazarus, calling on the faithful to seek and fulfill the will of God.

The cathedral sisterhood prepared a luncheon in the church hall for the clergy, parishioners, and guests.

At 2:00 PM, Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, convened the anticipated gathering in honor of the sixth anniversary of the martyr repose of renowned missionary Priest Daniel Sysoev, a man whose name has been linked to a rebirth of missionary activity in modern-day Russia, who was vouchsafed a martyr’s death at the hands of a murder on November 19, 2009 in the Church of the Holy Apostle Thomas, which he built in Moscow. Opening the meeting, Metropolitan Hilarion addressed those gathered with a short sermon, in which he noted, in part, that Fr. Daniel "knew how to preach in а persuasive and civilized manner, with love, at the same time leaving his opponents unable to give adequate [rebuttal]. It is namely this type of well thought-out, accessible, and uncompromising witness that is so needed in our times, а new way of preaching which will reach and persuade the person of our day and age."

Among the guests was Matushka Julia Sysoev, Fr. Daniel’s widow, Fr. Dionysius Pozdnyaev, his classmate in Moscow Seminary and collaborator at the missionary center, and Fr. George Maximov, doctoral candidate of theology, Orthodox theologian, head of the Apologetics Mission of the Synodal Missionary Department, member of the Inter-Council Presence of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as Sergey Stanilovsky, head of the Fr. Daniel Sysoev Fund, and Deacon Nathan Williams (cleric of St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Richmond, ME), translator of Fr. Daniel’s books. Speakers shared their recollections of Fr. Daniel in his everyday life, and of the beginnings and details of his missionary service. Books by Fr. Daniel, as well as CDs with his sermons, were available throughout and after the gathering.
