Atlanta, GA: Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan performs Archpastoral Visit to Joy of All Who Sorrow Parish

On Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of November, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, vicar of the Eastern American Diocese, paid an archpastoral visit to Our Lady "Joy of All Who Sorrow" Church in Atlanta, GA, where he blessed its cemetery chapel and led the celebrations in honor of the parish’s patronal feast day.

On November 7, St. Demetrius Soul Saturday, immediately following his arrival in Atlanta, Bishop Nicholas traveled to the parish cemetery, where he blessed the recently erected chapel in honor of the Holy Archangel Michael. The chapel, built in the traditional Russian style, now proclaims without any doubt the Orthodox identity of the adjoining land and graves.

The upper part of the chapel – the cross, cupola, drum, and roof – were ordered in Russia from the engineering company "Grant," based in Volgodonsk. Marketing Department engineer Andrei Chupakov coordinated the manufacturing work, to which "Grant" devoted special attention and care. Oversight of the project was run by "Grant’s" General Director, Viktor Rebenok. "Grant" handled its task outstandingly: the ordered items were made in accordance with Orthodox tradition, beautiful, high-quality, precise, and inexpensive. The container arrived from Russia one week before the patronal feast; thanks to the precise measurements and exact labeling, the chapel was quickly assembled by parishioners and professionals from local companies.

Upon completion of the chapel blessing, His Grace served a litiya for the departed with the parish clergy. A multitude of parishioners was present, and prayed with the clergy. Now the newly constructed and newly blessed Holy Archangel Michael Chapel stands tall, like a burning candle, above the parish cemetery.

On Saturday evening, November 7, Bishop Nicholas led the All-Night Vigil, co-served by parish rector Priest Eugene Antonov, Deacon John Hanson (cleric of neighboring St. Mary of Egypt Church in Atlanta), and parish Deacon Anton Kouznetsov. On Sunday, November 8, His Grace was concelebrated at the Divine Liturgy by the above-mentioned clergy, as well as Priest Benedict Simpson (chaplain of Glorious Ascension Monastery in Resaca, GA). There were significantly more worshippers that day, as parishioners of Joy of All Who Sorrow parish were joined by parishioners of St. Mary of Egypt Church and Glorious Ascension Monastery.

The service concluded with a moleben to the Most Holy Theotokos, after which a festal luncheon was served for the clergy and faithful.
