St. Mary of Egypt Church in Roswell (Atlanta), GA held its 11th annual summer camp during the week of July 16-20 for children aged 4-16.
This year, the children learned about different Orthodox countries: Russia, Georgia, and Greece, and learned about the modern-day saints from those countries, as well as from the United States. The mornings, beginning with prayers at 9:30 AM, were filled with study, and the afternoons were devoted to crafts and playing outdoors.
The children tried to recreate Moscow’s St. Basil’s Cathedral using just marshmallows and toothpicks, and were given painting lessons from an artist parishioner. Teenagers volunteered to teach lessons, do crafts, and play games during the camp.
A major part of the time was spent teaching the children about the Orthodoxy in the world, and especially about the saints whose icons are in the church. Special emphasis was given to the importance of the prayer in the worship of the Church and in their own lives.
