On Friday, October 25, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations (DECR), while on a visit to the United States, visited the Synodal Headquarters of the Russian Church Abroad – the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign in New York City, where he venerated the principal holy icon of the Russian Diaspora – the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign."
His Eminence was welcomed by Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan on behalf of the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York.
The two hierarchs continued their talk over tea. Also taking part in the meeting were Archpriest Serafim Gan, chancellor of the Synod of Bishops; Archpriest Andrew Sommer, dean of the cathedral; Abbot Nicodemus (Balyasnikov), cleric of St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York; and Subdeacon Vyacheslav Li, who accompanied the head of the DECR.
In memory of his visit to the Synodal Cathedral, Bishop Nicholas presented Metropolitan Hilarion with a copy of the Icon of the New Martyrs & Confessors of the Russian Church, which was painted in 1981.
