New York City: On Sunday before Christ’s Nativity, Metropolitan Hilarion celebrates Liturgy in Synodal Cathedral

On January 5, the Sunday before Christ’s Nativity, dedicated to the Holy Fathers, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City, co-served by Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan. Concelebrating with the hierarchs were cathedral dean Archpriest Andrei Sommer, Archpriest Edward Chervinsky, and Protodeacon Nicolas Mokhoff (cathedral clerics), and as well as Protodeacon Serge Arlievsky (cleric of Holy Dormition Convent "Novo-Diveevo" in Nanuet, NY. The Synodal choir sang under the direction of Protodeacon Vadim Gan.

The service was held under the aegis of the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God. On the eve of Christ’s Nativity, the church was filled with worshippers, who came to pray, confess their sins, and commune of Christ’s Holy Mysteries.

Upon completion of the service, Metropolitan Hilarion spoke about the particularities of the Sunday of the Holy Fathers, and about the significance for the people of that time of the Savior’s lineage. His Eminence called on the faithful to cleanse their hearts and souls, in order to prepare in them a place for the Newborn Christ.

Bishop Nicholas told those present that long-time cathedral parishioners Slobodan Dabovic, Aleksandra Kadic, and their daughters Maria and Anna are moving to San Francisco, and thanked them for their labors on behalf of the church. Metropolitan Hilarion blessed the family with an icon of Christ’s Nativity, which will be kept in their new home in California.

The cathedral sisterhood prepared a lenten luncheon for the clergy and parishioners.
