Jordanville, NY: Bishop Luke leads Theophany Services at Holy Trinity Monastery

The great feast of Theophany – the Baptism of the Lord – comes at the end of the so-called "Holy Days," or Christmastide. At Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, the divine services for the feast began with the reading of the Royal Hours on Friday morning, January 17, with no Liturgy, since the feast fell on Sunday this year.

On Saturday morning, January 18, the Eve of Theophany, His Grace Luke, Bishop of Syracuse and abbot of the monastery, celebrated the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, followed immediately by Great Vespers for the feast. This itself was immediately followed by a Great Blessing of Water in the monastery bell tower chapel. As is the monastery custom, one meal, strictly Lenten, was served after all the monastery and seminary quarters had been blessed with holy water.

On the feast itself, Sunday, January 19, Bishop Luke celebrated the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. During the Hours, he ordained Monk Theodore (Stanway) a subdeacon, while Monk Paisios (Levakov) was tonsured a reader.

Upon conclusion of Liturgy, His Grace once again, joined by monastery clergy, processed to the bell tower for another Great Blessing of Water. For the next several weeks, the monastery clergy, including Bishop Luke himself, will be busy blessing the homes of the many monastery neighbors and parishioners with holy water.
