New York City: On Sunday of the New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia, Metropolitan Hilarion celebrates Liturgy in Synodal Cathedral

On February 7, the 35th Sunday after Pentecost and the feast of the Holy New Martyr & Confessors of the Russian Church, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City. Concelebrating with the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad were the cathedral clergy: dean Archpriest Andrei Sommer, Archpriest Edward Chervinsky, Protodeacon Nicolas Mokhoff, and Hierodeacon Panteleimon (Jigalin). The Synodal choir sang prayerfully under the direction of conductor Vadim S. Gan.

The parishioners gathered at the divine service had the opportunity to pray before the Protectress of the Russian Diaspora ‒ the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God.

Many confessed their sins and communed of Christ’s Holy Mysteries.

Upon completion of Liturgy, Metropolitan Hilarion and the clergy served a moleben to the Holy New Martyrs. His Eminence greeted everyone with the feast of the Holy New Martyrs, and reminded the faithful of their martyric struggles. He called on them to remember those who were tortured and suffered during the years of persecution: those whom we know by name, as well as those whose names are unknown, about whom the Holy Apostle John the Theologian wrote as those " clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands" (Rev. 7:9). The Metropolitan also called on parishioners to remain steadfast in the Orthodox Faith and not to forsake God’s temple. He congratulated Archbishops Gabriel of Montreal & Canada and Peter of Chicago & Mid-America on their namesdays, wishing them many years, and bestowed God’s blessing on all those present.
