Atlanta, GA: Joy of All Who Sorrow Church holds Summer Camp for Families

On Friday the 5th and Saturday the 6th of August, the parish of Joy of All Who Sorrow Church in Cumming (Atlanta), GA hosted a retreat for their parishioners, parents, and children at the Monastery of the Glorious Ascension in Resaca, GA. Over 40 adults and children enjoyed the festivities and monastery grounds. The monastery chapel and facilities were opened for the group.

Visitors arrived Friday afternoon, and the children were treated to a snack before assisting the adults in setting up the campsite. Later in the evening, the parish women, headed by Matushka Irene Antonov, provided a communal meal. Toward nightfall, a bonfire was lit. Visitors enjoyed folk songs, guitar playing, roasting marshmallows, socializing until well after dark.

Monastery warden Deacon Laurence Powell gave a short talk about the history of the monastery since its inception. Sister Katherine took numerous photos of the activities and provided logistical support as needed.

In the morning, many visitors took advantage of the monastery trails for early morning hiking before enjoying a communal breakfast. Visitors cleaned up the facilities and departed in the afternoon.

The Monastery of the Glorious Ascension has scenic hiking trails, two cemeteries, two trailers providing lodging for about a dozen visitors, and two campsites for large groups. Visits and retreats can be arranged with Fr. Laurence (404-907-3866) or Sister Katherine (706-503-1835).
