Moscow: Holy Synod of Russian Orthodox Church confirms Election of Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan as ROCOR First Hierarch

On Wednesday, September 14, members of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church adopted the below published daily record, discussing its merits with the help of methods of remote communication.

DISCUSSED a petition by the Council of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad to confirm their election of His Grace Nicholas, Bishop of Manhattan, as its First Hierarch, Metropolitan of Eastern America & New York.

Background:

In accordance with the Act of Canonical Communion, signed May 17, 2007, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia is elected by its Council of Bishops. The election is confirmed, in keeping with norms of canonical law, by the Patriarch of Moscow & All Russia and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.

On September 13, 2022, the Council of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad, acting in accordance with the Bylaws of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, elected His Grace Nicholas, Bishop of Manhattan, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad.

A Decree on the election of the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia was addressed to His Holiness Kyrill, Patriarch of Moscow & All Russia, with a petition for His Holiness and the Holy Synod to confirm this decision by the Council of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad.

RESOLVED:

The decision of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad to elect His Grace Nicholas, Bishop of Manhattan, as its First Hierarch, Metropolitan of Eastern America & New York, is confirmed.
