On Tuesday, October 18, on the feast of the Synaxis of the Hierarchs of Moscow, clergy and matushkas from across the Eastern American Diocese gathered at St. Mary of Egypt Church in Atlanta, GA for the official start of the autumnal diocesan clergy conference. At 11:00 AM, participants greeted two wonderworking icons of the Mother of God – the Kursk Root Icon and the "Softener of Evil Hearts" – in the presence of which the conference will be held.
The first day of the autumnal Pastoral Conference came to a close at St. Mary of Egypt Church in Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, October 18. After the official conference opening and lunch, the first lecture – entitled "A Christian Ending" – was read by Deacon Mark Barna. His talk touched on the subject of lawful preparation of the body of the reposed and burial in the ancient Christian tradition.
Addressing the conference’s participants, His Grace called on the clergy and faithful to approach the Protectress of the Russian Diaspora "not as something we can take for granted," but to turn their gaze toward Russia: seeing how the people greet the holy icon, how they pray, how they strive to touch the icon even for a minute, lifting up their prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos.

On Friday, October 21, Archpriest Andrei Semyanko (former rector of Holy Presentation Church in Stratford, CT) reposed in the Lord after several years of failing health. He was 89 years old. Born in Poltava in 1927, the future Fr. Andrei was the son of Ivan and Eugenia Semyanko. He received his education at Lomonosov Gymnasium. The Icon of the Mother of God "Softener of Evil Hearts," after her visitation to the parishes and monasteries of America’s West Coast, arrived on the Atlantic coast on the eve of the opening of the Pastoral Conference in Atlanta, GA.
